Alcohol: 15.2%
Grape(s): Zinfandel
Localization: California, USA
Tasting Notes: Fragrant, lifted aromas of ripe dark fruits like black raspberry and blood orange on the nose. Superb balance between acidity, tannin, and spice, with a succulent, profoundly satisfying texture.
Notes:Though the vast majority of Turley's wines are single vineyard designates, Juvenile is actually composed of a variety of young vines that have been replanted in several old vine sites across 11 counties. Juvenile vines range in age from about 6-25 years. Native yeast fermentation, 95% used oak, 5% new -
80% French oak, 20% American.
The Domain: One of California's great wineries, Larry Turley's Turley Wine Cellars continues to play a critical role in safeguarding the Golden State's viticultural heritage, saving old, head-trained and sometimes own-rooted vineyards from destruction. With fully 29 different bottlings, Zinfandel (often complemented by small amounts of other co-planted varieties, such as Carignan and Grenache) is the standard-bearer here, though Turley also does a fantastic job with other varieties, most obviously Petite Syrah. Given how distinctive each of the single-vineyard bottlings is, it's tempting to suggest (though some will no doubt think it heretical) that Zinfandel might be the variety best adapted to expressing "terroir" in California.
